[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] On the 25th, Lee Jeong-hoon, Mayor of Gangdong-gu, attended the ‘Autumn Harvest Event’ held at the Urban Agriculture Park and experienced traditional farming together with the ‘Gangdong Native Guardians’ and the ‘Seonsa High School Student Experience Group.’
This event provided an educational opportunity for students to deepen their understanding of rice, our staple food, by personally experiencing the process from rice harvesting to threshing and milling. Additionally, through traditional farming tool experiences and rice cake pounding, children were encouraged to actively participate, and the sharing of refreshments allowed everyone to enjoy the joy of harvest after labor.
Opened in 2013 at Iljasan, Gangdong-gu Urban Agriculture Park serves as an ecological experience education space for youth, offering opportunities to engage with agriculture within the city, and as a place of rest and healing for the elderly, making it a beloved space for residents of all generations.
The native rice paddy within the Urban Agriculture Park is one of the measures Gangdong-gu is implementing to respond to the climate change crisis. The district is striving to resolve food safety concerns caused by GMOs (genetically modified organisms) and to restore seed sovereignty and realize a sustainable ecological city through the preservation and distribution of native seeds.
Mayor Lee Jeong-hoon stated, “Through the traditional autumn harvest in the city, I hope our children will internalize the birth process of our food and take time to reflect on the preciousness of our native rice.”
On the morning of the 26th, Kim Soo-young, Mayor of Yangcheon-gu, attended the anti-corruption and integrity pledge and proclamation ceremony for ‘Realizing a Clean City Yangcheon’ held at the 4th floor Gonggam Planning Office of the district office.
At the proclamation ceremony, Mayor Kim Soo-young and 35 executives at grade 5 or higher pledged to take the lead in realizing a clean and just public service society.
Mayor Kim Soo-young urged all staff to unite in creating ‘Corruption Zero! Clean City Yangcheon,’ where no one’s privilege is tolerated and no one is discriminated against.
Gangnam-gu (Mayor Jung Soon-gyun) signed a business agreement with GKL (Grand Korea Leisure) and GKLWITH on the 25th at the district office main building to support the self-sufficiency of vulnerable groups in the area.
Under this agreement, the district will discover and recommend participants for self-sufficiency projects, and the two organizations will cooperate by dispatching CS professional instructors and providing education, operating employment programs, and linking internship-type jobs at GKLWITH to help vulnerable groups become independent.
GKLWITH, a subsidiary of GKL that provides workplaces for career development, is responsible for operational support tasks such as food and beverage services at the foreigner-only casino ‘Seven Luck,’ VIP customer transportation, and facility management. Internship-type jobs may later lead to regular employment, serving as a stepping stone for economic independence.
Since 2019, the district has provided jobs to 21 low-income residents annually through GKL’s social contribution public offering project for three years. Since last April, with support from employment instructors, job training and specialized service education have been conducted for project participants at the Gangnam Regional Self-Sufficiency Center.
Mayor Jung Soon-gyun of Gangnam-gu said, “This agreement enables us to realize solid customized employment and welfare services,” adding, “We will continue to strive to create an ‘inclusive welfare city’ Gangnam based on the ‘Gangnam Welfare Standard,’ which was introduced for the first time among autonomous districts.”
On the morning of the 22nd, Kim Soo-young, Mayor of Yangcheon-gu, received a donation of 5 million won from members of Mokdong Aris, the fan club of singer Kim Ho-joong.
This donation ceremony was planned as the Mokdong Aris fan club of singer Kim Ho-joong raised funds and participated in the My Day donation campaign of the Yangcheon Love Welfare Foundation.
The donated funds will be used to purchase necessary items for three welfare facilities in the region, including local children’s centers and women and children protection facilities, and will be delivered with care.
