[Asia Economy Reporter Cho Hyun-ui] As signs of a COVID-19 resurgence appear in China, Hong Kong plans to eliminate even the quarantine exemption benefits that were applied to a very small number of people.
Carrie Lam, Chief Executive of Hong Kong, said on the 26th, according to local media HK01, "Except for emergency service workers and truck drivers who cross the border daily for logistics, most exemption measures will soon be terminated."
Lam explained this decision as "to give the central government confidence to allow movement between China and Hong Kong in the future." It is interpreted as an intention to present a better quarantine performance report to the Chinese government amid concerns about COVID-19 in China.
Hong Kong mandates 14 to 21 days of hotel quarantine for all arrivals. Thanks to this strict quarantine policy, there have been almost no reported local infection cases for several months.
Bloomberg News analyzed, "Hong Kong, which already has the strictest quarantine policy in the world, has further strengthened its quarantine measures under pressure from Chinese authorities."
