KT CEO Koo Hyun-mo: "Sincerely Apologize... Will Prepare Recurrence Prevention and Compensation Measures"

[Asia Economy Reporter Eunmo Koo] KT officially apologized on the 25th for the nationwide wired and wireless internet service outage.

KT CEO Koo Hyun-mo stated in an apology letter on the afternoon of the 26th, "We sincerely apologize to all customers who experienced inconvenience due to yesterday's nationwide internet outage."

CEO Koo explained, "Initially, KT suspected a DDoS attack from external sources due to traffic overload at the start of the internet outage, but it was confirmed that the cause was a network routing error that occurred during the replacement of the latest equipment for service enhancement," adding, "We are actively cooperating with the government's investigation into the cause."

In particular, he said, "As the CEO of KT, I deeply feel responsible for the inconvenience caused to customers who trust KT and use our services," and promised, "We will do our best to prevent recurrence."

He continued, "Along with an in-depth inspection, we will supplement our processes and take this incident as an opportunity to thoroughly review the entire wired and wireless network communication system," and stated, "We will also promptly prepare compensation measures."

He concluded by saying, "Once again, we offer our deepest apologies to all customers who experienced inconvenience."

Starting around 11:20 a.m. the previous day, KT's wired and wireless internet services experienced an outage lasting about 40 minutes, causing significant inconvenience to subscribers nationwide. Services across KT's internet, including internet search, stock trading systems, store payment systems, and corporate work systems, were disrupted.

Most internet services were restored around noon, but recovery was delayed in some areas. KT initially attributed the incident to a DDoS attack but corrected its position after about two hours, stating the outage was due to a routing (network path configuration) error.
