Full Restoration of Jeolla Gamyeong and Start of Jeonju Buseong Restoration Initiated

[Jeonju=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Han-ho] The first step has been taken toward the complete restoration of Jeonla Gamyeong, including the western site, and the restoration of Jeonju Buseong, where parts of the fortress wall were discovered.

On the 26th, Jeonju City held the first meeting of the ‘Jeonla Gamyeong Complete Restoration and Jeonju Buseong Historical Re-creation Committee’ at Seonhwadang of Jeonla Gamyeong, with experts from various fields such as history, traditional architecture, urban planning, and content participating.

The newly launched Re-creation Committee consists of 14 members, including experts in traditional architecture, archaeology, urban planning, urban regeneration, history, and content, as well as city council members and administrative officials.

Over the next two years, the Re-creation Committee will hold quarterly plenary meetings and monthly working meetings to ensure objectivity in carrying out the restoration projects of Jeonla Gamyeong and Jeonju Buseong, and establish a sincere restoration direction based on expertise from various fields.

In particular, Jeonju City plans to focus discussions with the committee on the restoration direction and utilization plans for the western and southern sites of Jeonla Gamyeong, where restoration of six buildings including Seonhwadang on the eastern site was completed last year, and prepare detailed promotion plans to develop the area connecting Hanok Village, Pungnammun Gate, Jeonla Gamyeong, and Pungpaejigwan as a core space of the old downtown.

Regarding Jeonju Buseong, since the foundation parts of the fortress wall were recently confirmed through excavation surveys at the northwest side (Okto Parking Lot) and northeast side (Korean Traditional Culture Center), the city plans to accelerate the restoration project of the fortress wall and gates through land acquisition efforts.

Based on the opinions from the Re-creation Committee, Jeonju City will implement additional restoration projects to create a historical and cultural space throughout the old downtown area, establish a representative cultural infrastructure in the Honam region, and utilize it as a tourism resource and historical education center linked with various cultural heritages.

Furthermore, it will serve as an opportunity to newly highlight the historical significance of Jeollabuk-do Province and enhance the pride of Jeonju citizens.

Mayor Kim Seung-su of Jeonju said, “The complete restoration of Jeonla Gamyeong and the restoration of Jeonju Buseong mark the beginning of another millennium connecting Jeonju’s thousand years.” He added, “We will do our best with experts to restore not just the buildings but also Jeonju’s spirit and history, passing on their value to future generations.”

Previously, in October last year, Jeonla Gamyeong, the governing institution that oversaw the politics, economy, and culture of Honam during the 500 years of the Joseon Dynasty, completed the first phase of restoration on the eastern site, including Seonhwadang, Naea, and Gwanpunggak, with a total project cost of 10.4 billion KRW.

As for Jeonju Buseong, the foundation facilities of the northeast fortress wall were discovered in January in the area of Gyeongwon-dong 3-ga, Wansan-gu.
