Industry Ministry Expresses Concern Over US Semiconductor Information Requests... Discusses Holding Ministerial-Level Talks

[Sejong=Asia Economy Reporter Kwon Haeyoung] The government repeatedly conveyed its concerns regarding the United States' request for semiconductor data information and discussed plans to hold ministerial-level industrial cooperation talks between the two countries. They also decided to establish a director-general-level semiconductor dialogue channel.

The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy announced on the 26th that it held a director-general-level video conference with the U.S. Department of Commerce on the 25th. Choi Wooseok, Director General of the Materials Convergence Bureau at the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, and Monica Gorman, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Manufacturing at the U.S. Department of Commerce, attended the meeting.

Both sides discussed the semiconductor partnership and the holding of industrial cooperation talks between the two countries. This consultation aims to more firmly implement the Korea-U.S. cooperation partnership established at the Korea-U.S. summit in May.

First, considering the importance of cooperation in the semiconductor sector between the two countries, they agreed to establish a regular director-general-level semiconductor dialogue channel to discuss cooperation. They also discussed plans to expand and elevate the existing director-general-level "Korea-U.S. Industrial Cooperation Dialogue" to a ministerial level to discuss various industrial cooperation topics including semiconductors.

An official from the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy stated, "Regarding the U.S. Department of Commerce's request for semiconductor supply chain data, we fully explained to the U.S. side that there are significant concerns within the domestic industry," adding, "We will continue to closely consult with the U.S. side going forward."
