[Sejong=Asia Economy Reporter Moon Chaeseok] On the 25th, Hong Nam-ki, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy and Finance, met with Um Woo-jong, Secretary-General of the Asian Development Bank (ADB), at the Government Seoul Office and urged, "Let Korea and ADB closely cooperate to expand regional vaccine production capacity."

On this day, the two discussed various cooperation plans including vaccine and health cooperation between the Korean government and ADB. Deputy Prime Minister Hong said, "Vaccine cooperation with ADB is one of the important tasks to promote the global vaccine hub strategy prepared by Korea on August 5," and urged, "Let Korea and ADB closely cooperate to expand regional vaccine production capacity and strengthen health and quarantine systems in developing countries."

Deputy Prime Minister Hong requested Secretary-General Um's support, saying, "It is necessary to open an ADB office in Korea to promote common interest projects between the two sides, such as vaccine and health cooperation, climate change response, tax cooperation, and startup fostering." The government expects that the cooperation between the two sides will be further strengthened after hosting the 2023 ADB Annual Meeting in Songdo, Incheon.

Secretary-General Um responded, "I appreciate Korea's leading leadership in spearheading regional vaccine cooperation," and said, "We will actively support cooperation tasks such as establishing a training course for vaccine specialists for developing countries in Korea and building production plants for Korean companies in regional developing countries to achieve results."

Appointed in February, Secretary-General Um has become a top executive participating in ADB management meetings. He participates in major decision-making such as management meetings. He is the first Korean since former Secretary-General Lee Young-hoe 15 years ago.
