[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Jeong Seunghyun] Mokpo City, Jeollanam-do announced on the 25th that it has completed the work of compiling modern cultural assets.

Through the “Mokpo Modern Cultural Assets Archive Construction Project,” part of the Cultural Heritage Administration’s “Pilot Project for Revitalization of Modern Historical and Cultural Spaces,” the city has established a database system that comprehensively covers Mokpo’s modern materials including figures, history, culture, and heritage.

The project, led by the Academy of Korean Studies Foundation and involving three companies, has been underway for 1 year and 2 months since August last year, and its results were presented at the final report meeting held on the 20th.

The archive is scheduled to be publicly accessible from November through the “Mokpo Modern Historical and Cultural Space Modern Cultural Assets Archive” website and can also be viewed on the Mokpo City Culture and Tourism homepage.

This project was conducted in three areas: basic investigation of Mokpo’s modern cultural assets, architectural measurement surveys and 3D modeling, and digital data conversion.

The basic investigation went beyond mere data collection to study the correlations among meaningful data, naturally linking them into storytelling. All related materials concerning Mokpo’s modern era?including humanities data, old photos, old maps, newspaper articles, and buildings?were interconnected in a chain. For example, searching for the playwright Kim Woojin provides related historical materials verifying family relationships, creative activities, and his lover Yoon Simdeok.

In addition, well-preserved modern buildings in Mokpo were measured and created as 3D models, which were then three-dimensionally implemented on a 3D map. With the establishment of a digital environment, it is now possible to virtually experience Mokpo’s modern historical and cultural spaces without visiting in person.

Furthermore, it is expected that various storytelling using Mokpo’s modern cultural assets, as well as knowledge information services co-created by administrators and users, will be possible.

The city plans to establish a systematic archive management system to continuously reflect new materials and changes in the future.

Kim Jongsik, Mayor of Mokpo, stated, “Although Mokpo possesses excellent modern historical assets, specific and systematic management has not been conducted until now. We consider it very meaningful to have meticulously organized most of the historical materials through the archive construction. The compiled materials are expected to highlight the identity of Mokpo as a representative modern city in Korea and enhance its historical and cultural value.”
