Gwangju University Wins U-League Region 7 Championship in College Soccer

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Cho Hyung-joo] The Gwangju University (President Kim Hyuk-jong) soccer team won the championship in Zone 7 of the ‘2021 University Soccer U-League.’ This marks their fourth overall zone championship.


According to Gwangju University on the 25th, Gwangju University secured a 3-0 victory against Donggang University in their final match on the 22nd, finishing with a record of 10 wins, 3 draws, and 1 loss, accumulating 33 points and securing first place, thus confirming their advancement to the champions’ playoff.


The ‘2021 U-League,’ jointly hosted by the Korea Football Association and the Korea University Sports Council, featured a record 85 teams participating.


This league was divided into zones from Zone 1 to Zone 11 by region, and the top 32 teams will compete for the championship in the champions’ playoff held in Yeongdeok starting from the 12th of next month.


Zone 7, which includes universities from the Gwangju and Jeonbuk regions, saw competition among Gwangju University, Woosuk University, Jeonju University, Honam University, Wonkwang University, Hanil Jangsin University, Gunjang University, and Donggang University.


Lee Seung-won, head coach of the Gwangju University soccer team, said, “After winning the national spring university soccer federation championship in March this year, we have been vigorously preparing to win the champions’ playoff. Although there are gaps in our lineup due to players moving on to professional teams, we will do our best to prepare through physical conditioning, organization, and tactical training.”
