[Asia Economy (Daejeon) Reporter Jeong Il-woong] The relocation of the Korea Meteorological Industry Technology Institute, Korea Forestry Promotion Institute, and Korea Patent Strategy Development Institute to Daejeon, along with the Korea Meteorological Administration, has been confirmed.
According to Daejeon City on the 25th, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport will designate the three public institutions, including the Korea Meteorological Industry Technology Institute, as institutions relocating to Daejeon and plans to announce this in the official gazette dated the 27th.
It is also expected that the Korea Meteorological Administration’s “regional relocation plan,” which is currently in the process of relocating to Daejeon, will be approved as of the 28th.
Earlier, the National Balanced Development Committee resolved the “designation of relocating public institutions (proposal)” for the three public institutions and the “regional relocation plan (proposal)” for the Korea Meteorological Administration at the plenary session on the 13th. Once the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport’s final announcement and approval are completed, the actual relocation procedures can proceed.
The city expects that once these public institutions are designated as relocating institutions, negotiations with the Ministry of Economy and Finance regarding relocation budgets and other matters will proceed relatively smoothly, accelerating the relocation process.
Each institution plans to finalize the relocation site and, after going through approval procedures with the National Balanced Development Committee and the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, will begin sequential relocation starting in the second half of next year.
The Korea Patent Strategy Development Institute is expected to submit its regional relocation plan in December this year, the Korea Forestry Promotion Institute in June next year, and the Korea Meteorological Industry Technology Institute in October next year.
The expected relocation timings for each institution are September next year for the Korea Patent Strategy Development Institute, the second half of next year for the Korea Forestry Promotion Institute, and the second half of 2025 for the Korea Meteorological Industry Technology Institute.
Prior to these institutions, the Korea Meteorological Administration plans to relocate its policy department (346 personnel) to the Government Complex Daejeon from December this year to February next year, and other operational departments (320 personnel) will additionally relocate to the National Meteorological Center to be constructed on the Government Complex Daejeon site by June 2026.
Yu Deuk-won, Director of Planning and Coordination at the city, said, “We will spare no effort to support the stable settlement of the relocated Korea Meteorological Administration employees in the region once the relocation procedures are completed,” and added, “We will closely cooperate with the three public institutions whose relocation has been confirmed to promptly secure relocation sites and help enable relocation as soon as possible.”
