Gwangju Seo-gu Conducts 'Containment Drill' to Prepare for Water Pollution Accidents


[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Shin Dong-ho] Seo-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City (Mayor Seo Dae-seok) announced on the 25th that it recently conducted a large-scale water pollution accident response training near Gwangcheon 1 Bridge on Gwangju Stream.


The response training was carried out with the participation of seven employees from the Climate and Environment Division of Seo-gu Office. It was organized to establish an efficient response and recovery system for actual water pollution accidents and to minimize environmental damage through prompt initial actions.


The training assumed a scenario where 50 liters of waste oil were spilled due to a vehicle accident at Gwangcheon 1 Bridge, and proceeded in the following order: ▲ receiving report of oil spill accident and disseminating on-site situation ▲ initial response stage, blocking oil from entering the water system ▲ dispatch and accident response stage, conducting containment work using oil fences and absorbent pads ▲ follow-up stage, collecting samples to check for oil spread after containment and reporting completion of response work.


An official from Seo-gu stated, “We enhance our response capabilities for actual accidents through biannual response trainings every year,” and added, “We will continue to seek and conduct various response training plans tailored to different types of water pollution accidents.”
