[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Seohyun] Kim Taeho, a member of the People Power Party, defended former Prosecutor General Yoon Seok-yeol's 'dog apology' controversy, saying, "It doesn't seem like a Yeouido-style way of thinking. When you speak from the heart, it can lead to a slip of the tongue."
Kim, who joined Yoon's campaign as a co-chairman of the joint election committee, said on MBC Radio's 'Kim Jong-bae's Focus' on the 25th, in response to the host's question about the cause and solution of Yoon's verbal controversies, "There may be more in the future."
Regarding Yoon's words and actions, he said, "(However) I have the impression that he is making meaningful progress step by step," and added, "It seems that his know-how on how to judge situations, adapt, and adjust the level of his words is advancing a lot."
On the remarks defending Chun Doo-hwan, he said, "He is someone who has a firmer philosophy of liberal democracy than anyone else. Isn't this something that all citizens share?" He answered that voters would understand Yoon's basic philosophy.
Regarding the controversy over the dog apology photo, he explained, "I want to believe it as it is," and said, "It doesn't mean that he sees the people as dogs, but rather expresses an apology like 'even to you who see your pet dog as a child'."
He continued, "There are over 10 million people who raise companion dogs. Didn't candidate Yoon also say that he thinks of his pet dog as a child? So I think that even the smallest things in that part are expressions that reflect his feelings."
Regarding the controversy over the photo shooting location, he said, "Anyway, isn't the essential intention to inform the people important?"
In response to the host's question, "If such slips of the tongue are repeated, wouldn't Yoon's so-called greatest strength, the ability to expand the moderate base, ultimately decline?" he replied, "That's the two sides of the same coin," and added, "There will be judgments from the people who see the matter."
He emphasized, "Despite these incidents, expectations and support for candidate Yoon among the moderate group are strengthening. Yoon's courage to stand firm without yielding or compromising in the face of oppression by power, to say black is black and white is white ? I think people are now pondering what that courage really is," and added, "It is trust in the people and loyalty to the people. The understanding of that is gradually broadening."
He also added, "Because that is the foundation, the question of how to lead the national anger and despair against the Moon administration into hope and expectation ? still, Yoon is the only sure winning candidate alternative."
