[Asia Economy Reporter Ki-min Lee] Hydrogen Convergence Alliance (H2KOREA) announced on the 25th that it has signed a Memorandum of Cooperation (MoC) with Qatar Energy to strengthen cooperation in the field of clean hydrogen.
The signing ceremony for the MoC, held on the 24th (local time) in Doha, Qatar, was attended by key officials including Moon Seung-wook, Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy, Moon Jae-do, Chairman of H2KOREA, and Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi, Minister of Commerce and Industry of Qatar and President of Qatar Energy.
Qatar Energy, established in 1974, is a state-owned oil company of Qatar that is involved domestically and internationally in all energy sectors including natural gas, oil, petrochemicals, renewable energy, and general energy, and is organized and operated under Qatari law.
H2KOREA explained that the two organizations reached a consensus that hydrogen will play a crucial role in the transition to a clean energy system to achieve carbon dioxide emission reduction in energy use between Korea and Qatar, the largest natural gas cooperation countries, leading to the signing of this MoC.
Through this MoC, cooperation in the field of clean hydrogen will be strengthened to promote the growth of the hydrogen industry and expansion of hydrogen supply in both countries, contributing to the formation of the global hydrogen market.
Specifically, they agreed to focus capabilities on ▲ regular meetings and events for information exchange ▲ strengthening cooperation in hydrogen full-cycle technology development ▲ supporting hydrogen industry expansion through policy exchange ▲ establishing hydrogen supply chains to form hydrogen export-import markets.
In particular, with this MoC, it is expected that Qatar’s natural gas production and supply capacity and carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) technology base will be combined with Korea’s technological capabilities in hydrogen production and utilization to secure blue hydrogen production and supply capabilities.
Moon Jae-do, Chairman of H2KOREA, said, "Based on the achievements in energy and resources accumulated by both countries so far and each country's strengths, we will become strategic partners in the future energy source, hydrogen sector," adding, "We will work closely with Qatar Energy to jointly advance the hydrogen industry in both countries."
