[Asia Economy (Suwon) = Reporter Lee Young-gyu] Suwon City in Gyeonggi Province will extend the 'Emergency Welfare Support Criteria Relaxation' measure, which has been in effect since March last year to assist low-income households struggling due to COVID-19, until the end of December this year.
Suwon City previously relaxed the emergency welfare support criteria to ▲ 75% or less of the median income ▲ general property of 200 million KRW or less ▲ financial assets of 12.31 million KRW or less for a four-person household.
Emergency welfare is a system that provides living expenses and other support to households facing sudden crises such as loss of income due to unemployment or illness, or practical business difficulties due to temporary closure or suspension.
The city has been providing fuel expenses to emergency welfare recipients since this month.
Through the 'Temporary Expansion of Emergency Welfare Support System in Response to COVID-19,' the city has supported 5.85 billion KRW (127,560 cases) in emergency living expenses, medical expenses, and more to low-income households experiencing crises as of October this year.
A city official emphasized, "Winter is the hardest time for households in crisis experiencing financial hardship," adding, "We will actively look out for and identify neighbors in need to ensure that no blind spots occur in the social safety net."
