Naver Strengthens Comment Policy Ahead of Presidential Election... Up to 3 Comments per Article

[Asia Economy Reporter Kang Nahum] Naver is strengthening its news comment restriction policy ahead of the presidential election. The previous rule, which allowed up to three comments per article, now includes deleted comments in the count.

According to industry sources on the 24th, Naver reinforced the related policy on the 21st to limit a single user to a total of three comments per article, including deleted comments. This measure is interpreted as a preemptive step to prevent comment manipulation controversies ahead of next year's presidential election.

Since April 2018, Naver has limited users to a maximum of three comments per article. Policies established at that time also included a daily limit of 50 likes/dislikes clicks, a 10-second restriction on consecutive likes/dislikes clicks, and a 60-second restriction on consecutive comment postings. However, previously, if a user deleted a comment, the number of comments they could post increased accordingly.

Naver stated, "There is a possibility that comment posting accompanied by deletions could be repeated on certain high-profile articles. To strengthen the purpose of operating a comment space where more diverse opinions can be exchanged, we are changing the policy."

Naver has been consistently introducing new policies to improve comment culture. To prevent harm caused by malicious comments, it abolished comments on entertainment and sports news, enforced comment history disclosure, required profile photo exposure when writing comments, and improved the AI Clean Bot.

In the second half of this year, a follow function for comment writers is also scheduled to be added.
