[Asia Economy Reporter Baek Kyunghwan] Despite receiving leniency such as suspended sentences for seven instances of drunk driving, a man in his 50s who once again drove under the influence has been sentenced to prison.
On the 23rd, the Ulsan District Court Criminal Division 3 (Presiding Judge Kim Yonghee) announced that it sentenced Mr. A, a man in his 50s who was tried on charges including violation of the Special Act on the Treatment of Traffic Accidents, to 1 year and 6 months in prison.
Mr. A was indicted for hitting and injuring a teenager walking along the roadside while riding a motorcycle on a side street in Ulsan last May. At the time, Mr. A was unlicensed and in a state of severe intoxication with a blood alcohol concentration of 0.186%. He drove in a zigzag pattern for about 20 meters before causing the accident.
Investigations revealed that Mr. A had been caught a total of seven times for refusing breath tests and drunk driving enforcement, receiving fines or suspended prison sentences. Despite this, he was caught again for drunk driving.
The court stated the reason for the sentence, saying, "Despite being punished multiple times, he caused a drunk driving accident," and "considering the victim's settlement and the defendant's poor health and financial situation."
