[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Ji-eun] Jeon Gyeong-hwan, the younger brother of former President Jeon Du-hwan, passed away on the 21st at the age of 79. Jeon had been battling chronic illnesses such as cerebral infarction and multiple heart valve diseases. A former military officer, Jeon worked in the secretariat of Samsung Group after his retirement and was appointed as an aide to the Presidential Security Service when former President Jeon took office in 1980. He later served as the chairman of the Saemaeul Movement Central Headquarters and received the Saemaeul Medal for Self-Reliance, a national honor, in 1987.
However, two years later, while serving as chairman of the Saemaeul Movement Headquarters, he was sentenced to seven years in prison and fined 2.2 billion won for embezzling 7.6 billion won of public funds. In April 2004, he was also indicted for deceiving a construction businessman by promising to secure 100 million dollars in funding for an apartment construction project, pocketing 1.5 billion won and 70,000 US dollars. In May 2010, the Supreme Court confirmed a five-year prison sentence for fraud. Due to various illnesses, he received eight suspensions of sentence enforcement and was released on parole in 2017. The funeral hall was set up at Samsung Seoul Hospital in Irwon-dong, Seoul, with the funeral procession scheduled for the morning of the 24th, and the burial site is Pyeongon Forest in Yongin.
