[Asia Economy New York=Correspondent Baek Jong-min] A cultural performance commemorating United Nations Day was held on the evening of the 21st (local time) at the UN Headquarters General Assembly Hall in Manhattan, New York, led by the Korean government.
A performance by the girl group aespa is being screened at the United Nations General Assembly Hall.
The UN Secretariat has held cultural performances at the UN Headquarters General Assembly Hall every year around October 24, United Nations Day, in cooperation with member state governments.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs prepared this performance under the theme "Together for Recovery toward Peace and Prosperity" to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the simultaneous UN membership of South and North Korea.
At the celebration performance for the simultaneous UN membership of South and North Korea 30 years ago in 1991, the Korean-American violinist duo sisters Angela and Jennifer Jeon, who played "Pecho Fantasioso" composed by composer Isang Yun, performed the same piece on this stage after 30 years, receiving great applause.
Girl group aespa appeared via video, and soprano Shin Young-ok showcased Korean culture on site.
This cultural performance was the first hybrid event including in-person attendance held at the General Assembly Hall since the COVID-19 pandemic.
United Nations Day was officially designated as an international observance through UN General Assembly Resolution 2782 (1971) to commemorate October 24, 1945, the date the UN Charter came into effect.
The UN Mission also celebrated the 30th anniversary of the simultaneous UN membership of South and North Korea by distributing Korean snack lunch boxes including tteokbokki and dakgangjeong.
