Focus on Checking Visitor Capacity Preparedness for the 2023 Suncheonman International Garden Expo
Heo Seok, Mayor of Suncheon, Emphasizes Consistent Regeneration Goals through Cooperation Among Project Departments
[Suncheon=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Hyung-kwon] Suncheon City, Jeollanam-do (Mayor Heo Seok) held an executive meeting on the morning of the 21st to visit Yeokjeon Market and inspect the urban regeneration New Deal project centered around the station area and the Yeokjeon Market parking environment improvement project site.
The station area urban regeneration New Deal project, which has been underway since 2019 and will continue until 2023 with a total project cost of 34 billion KRW including 17 billion KRW in national funds, is promoting the creation of a business hub, specialization of three main streets, and the construction of various living SOC facilities including the Eoullim Welfare Center.
In addition, the Dream Fulfillment Shop, prepared to support prospective entrepreneurs, is about to begin full operation by remodeling the seafood coexistence space within the urban regeneration project area.
The smart urban regeneration project, selected in 2020 as a Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport contest project (4 billion KRW), aims to establish seven types of smart services around Suncheon Station, including a smart tourist information center, humanoid smart robots, and senior safety guardians.
This is to provide comprehensive smart services such as information on restaurants, accommodations, and virtual experiences of tourist attractions to visitors to Suncheon.
The Yeokjeon Market parking environment improvement project plans to purchase land near the previously narrow Yeokjeon public parking lot to create 65 parking spaces and equip a control system by December to provide parking convenience to citizens using the market.
Mayor Heo Seok, who received a progress report on-site, urged, “The projects being promoted centered on the station area should not be pursued individually but should be continuously shared and cooperated between departments to be closely connected with a consistent goal.”
He also requested to enhance efficiency through effectiveness analysis between similar projects such as Cheongchun Warehouse and the New Business Startup Academy, and to find ways to integrate them if necessary.
Furthermore, he ordered, “Regarding the building of the video horse racing track within the urban regeneration project area, which is currently under auction due to local tax arrears, analyze the utility compared to purchase and review the feasibility of acquisition. For the parking environment improvement project, since the land has already been secured, it should be promoted with the possibility of expansion in mind after the completion of the national project.”
Deputy Mayor Lim Chae-young, who attended the site, also emphasized, “Promotion and spatial arrangement should be reviewed so that the series of routes starting from Suncheon Station, passing through Yeokjeon Singsing Street, Dongcheon Garden Road, and the Garden Expo site can be naturally connected.”
A city official stated, “Once these projects underway in the station area are completed, the Yeokjeon Market area is expected not only to recover as a new tourist hub in the post-COVID-19 era but also to play an important bridging role leading visitors to the 2023 Suncheonman Garden Expo.”
