[Muan=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] Kim Young-rok, Governor of Jeonnam Province, strongly condemned former Prosecutor General Yoon Seok-yeol's 'praise of Jeon Du-hwan' and urged him to immediately retract his remarks and apologize on the 21st.
According to Jeonnam Province, Governor Kim issued a statement titled "Strongly Condemning Former Prosecutor General Yoon Seok-yeol Who Praised Jeon Du-hwan, the Culprit of the May 18 Incident," on the same day.
Governor Kim stated, "Along with 2 million Jeonnam residents, I strongly condemn former Prosecutor General Yoon's remark that 'there are quite a few people in Honam who say President Jeon Du-hwan was good at politics.'
He continued, "The praise of Jeon Du-hwan, the culprit of the May 18 Incident, denies the democracy and constitutional order of the Republic of Korea, which was achieved through noble blood and sacrifice, and is an anachronistic act that inflicts irreparable wounds on the May 18 martyrs and bereaved families whose pain has not yet healed," adding, "It is a serious insult to the citizens of Gwangju and Jeonnam who sacrificed for democracy."
He then urged, "Former Prosecutor General Yoon must immediately retract his pro-Jeon Du-hwan remarks and apologize," and added, "I hope the leadership and members of the People Power Party will actively cooperate in uncovering the truth of the May 18 Incident and restoring honor, and fulfill their promise to sincerely approach Honam."
