"Would You Like to Play a Round of Ddakji?"... Yeongdeungpo-gu Plays 'Ojingeo Game' with Youth

[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Yeongdeungpo-gu (Mayor Chae Hyun-il) will hold ‘StageFor Ojingeo Game,’ an event where participants can experience various games featured in globally popular content.

‘StageFor Ojingeo Game’ utilizes the outdoor space of Mujungryokjidae-Yeongdeungpo to realistically recreate the Netflix drama ‘Ojingeo Game,’ offering various programs that evoke childhood memories such as playing ttakji (folded paper game), dalgona candy picking, and treasure hunting featured in the drama.

Additionally, a bulletin board will be installed to express the feelings of young people who constantly struggle to survive in the fiercely competitive real world, similar to ‘Ojingeo Game,’ providing a space for empathy among youth.

The district expects that through this revitalizing program offering comfort and empathy, exhausted young people will have a chance to recharge briefly and that interest in the youth-exclusive space ‘Mujungryokjidae Yeongdeungpo’ will increase.

Yeongdeungpo-gu’s ‘Ojingeo Game’ is free for youths aged 19 to 39. Participants who post photos of their participation on SNS can receive small gifts through a lottery.

The event will be held for five days from October 25 to 29, weekdays from 4 to 6 p.m. Youths wishing to participate must apply in advance by October 22 via the ‘Mujungryokjidae Yeongdeungpo’ website’s ‘Program Application,’ the link posted on Instagram, or by visiting the center.

All programs will strictly follow COVID-19 prevention guidelines and will be conducted outdoors with participants divided into groups within the designated time.

For more details, contact Yeongdeungpo-gu Office’s Social Economy Division or Mujungryokjidae-Yeongdeungpo, or check Instagram posts.

Chae Hyun-il, Mayor of Yeongdeungpo-gu, said, “I hope that young people, exhausted by employment difficulties and the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic, will enjoy the ‘Ojingeo Game’ prepared in Yeongdeungpo and find some vitality, even if only briefly. We will continue to promote various projects and programs needed by local youth and strive to make Yeongdeungpo an open district that grows together with its youth.”

Gangbuk-gu (Mayor Park Gyeom-su) will hold an art exhibition under the theme ‘Capturing Autumn at Uicheon.’

The event will be held until the 26th (Tuesday) at the outdoor space under Beonchanggyo Bridge on Uicheon. It is designed to support local artists’ exhibition activities and allow residents to enjoy artworks in their daily lives.

The exhibition features a total of 96 works including Oriental painting, Western painting, calligraphy, and ceramics. Sixty-one artists from the Gangbuk Art Association have contributed paintings and sculptures. Canvas prints of reproduced works will be displayed to suit the outdoor exhibition’s nature. The artists have expressed stories about the lives of neighboring residents in a three-dimensional way. Various local landscapes, including Bukhansan Mountain through the four seasons, are also depicted on the canvases.

Gangbuk-gu decorated the exhibition space with structures connected by designed steel. To allow easy nighttime viewing of artworks, landscape lighting was installed on the exhibition structures. Staff members are assigned to explain the works and guide visitors, and movement routes are set to prevent crowding.

Park Gyeom-su, Mayor of Gangbuk-gu, said, “I hope people can quench their cultural thirst at Uicheon, transformed into an outdoor art museum. We will expand the scope of public art involving local artists so that culture and arts can be enjoyed in daily life.”

Jongno-gu (Mayor Kim Young-jong) achieved first place in the comprehensive evaluation of the metropolitan city category at the ‘2021 Korea Urban Awards’ hosted by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, earning the prestigious ‘Presidential Award.’

This award is especially meaningful as it is the second Presidential Award following the 2019 award and marks the only local government nationwide to win the Urban Award for eight consecutive years.

The Korea Urban Awards, hosted by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and organized by the Korean Society of Land and Urban Planning, annually evaluate 229 basic local governments nationwide based on sustainability and living infrastructure levels as stipulated in the National Land Planning and Utilization Act, awarding those with outstanding achievements.

Experts in various fields conducted a first round of document evaluation and a second round of online presentation evaluation across four categories: urban society, urban economy, urban environment, and support systems. Jongno-gu received excellent evaluations in each category, achieving first place overall.

In the urban society category, Jongno-gu was highly rated for operating various crime prevention programs reflecting local characteristics and promoting diverse urban design projects, as well as running concrete and practical programs for socially vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, and multicultural families.

In the urban environment category, ‘Inwangsan Chosochekbang’ was recognized as an excellent urban regeneration case making good use of local conditions. This space transformed a scheduled-for-demolition guard post building into a citizen rest area through collaboration with the Blue House and military units.

Other highly rated efforts include the ‘Making Jongno a Garden City’ project and policies such as ‘Creating Eco-friendly Green Parking Lots and Establishing Guidelines,’ which expanded green spaces in the city to reduce fine dust and mitigate the heat island effect.

Furthermore, various projects enhancing residents’ quality of life, such as promoting walking for public health, urban decluttering, and improving lighting environments in residential areas, contributed to the honor of winning first place in the metropolitan city category.

With this, Jongno-gu has proven its excellent administrative capabilities nationwide by achieving a triple crown of Presidential Awards in 2021: the Korea Urban Awards, Regional Innovation, and Korea Knowledge Awards.

The award ceremony was held online on October 21 during the ‘15th Urban Day Commemoration Ceremony’ to prevent COVID-19 spread.

Mayor Kim Young-jong said, “Since taking office in 2010, efforts to create the safest, most convenient, and beautiful city while preserving history and tradition have led to today’s Jongno and the great achievement of winning the Urban Award for eight consecutive years. We will continue to manage Jongno warmly with pride that ‘Jongno is Korea,’ striving to make it a city where everyone wants to live and recognized as Korea’s top premium city.”

"Would You Like to Play a Round of Ddakji?"... Yeongdeungpo-gu Plays 'Ojingeo Game' with Youth An 8-meter-tall 'Hug Bear' standing with arms wide open as if embracing

“The huge balloon bear is really cute. Let’s take a photo in front of it before we go.”

Young people visiting Hongdae say this as they gather one by one upon seeing the ‘Hug Bear’ installed near KT&G Sangsangmadang.

Mapo-gu (Mayor Yoo Dong-gyun) will showcase the large-scale installation art project ‘Hug Bear’ at the Hongdae Festival Street (around 365-28 Seogyo-dong) from the 20th to next month’s 8th.

This project, titled ‘EVERYWHERE PROJECT MAPO, SEE YOU AGAIN MAPO,’ is a collaboration between famous pop artist Lim Ji-bin and Mapo-gu to deliver messages of comfort and hope to citizens weary from COVID-19.

Artist Lim Ji-bin has been conducting guerrilla exhibitions transforming everyday spaces into art galleries for the general public. Following last year’s large bear balloon with the message ‘LOVE’ at Hongdae Festival Street, this year he brings the message ‘SEE YOU,’ expressing the hope for the end of COVID-19 and reunion with loved ones.

Standing in front of the 8-meter-tall ‘Hug Bear’ with open arms in a hugging pose gives the feeling of being warmly embraced by a soft teddy bear.

The district expects that exhibiting the ‘Hug Bear,’ which was a popular photo zone on SNS such as Instagram and Facebook last year, will revitalize the depressed Hongdae area and nearby tourist spots.

Additionally, ahead of Mapo-gu’s representative festival, the ‘14th Mapo Naru Salted Shrimp Festival,’ disinfection and sterilization will be conducted on the 21st around Hongdae streets to safely welcome tourists.

The disinfection event will be attended by Mayor Yoo Dong-gyun, the Mapo Culture and Tourism Council, Hongdae Merchants Association, and tourism industry workers to help tourist areas return to normal life quickly after COVID-19.

Mayor Yoo Dong-gyun said, “I hope this exhibition art will bring vitality to residents’ daily lives. We will also do our best in disinfection so that tourist spots like Hongdae can soon be bustling with people.”

Gangnam-gu (Mayor Jung Soon-gyun) signed a business agreement on the 20th at the district office main building with the KAIST Startup Institute and KAIST Youth Startup Investment Holdings to establish a growth foundation for local startups.

Gangnam-gu will provide a total of 417㎡ of space on the 3rd floor (278㎡) and 2nd floor (139㎡) of the ‘Gangnam Employment and Startup Hub Center,’ opening in March next year, to the two institutions for three years on a paid basis.

The two institutions will operate startup incubation spaces, entrepreneurship and innovation education, and KAIST’s proprietary development technology exchange programs to create a ‘Gangnam-style Startup Platform’ for discovering promising startups, investment attraction, and policy-linked projects within Gangnam-gu.

In July, the district applied to the Ministry of SMEs and Startups to designate a 560m section of Yeoksam-ro Startup Street as a ‘Venture Business Promotion Zone’ and in September raised a 53 billion KRW startup fund, continuing systematic preparations for a ‘Startup Valley.’

Mayor Jung Soon-gyun said, “During the 7th local government term, Gangnam-gu has been fostering unicorn companies by operating the largest startup fund among local governments nationwide and providing testbeds for startups. We will continue full policy support to revive Gangnam as ‘Korea’s Silicon Valley’ so that people say ‘I go to Gangnam to startup.’”

Geumcheon-gu (Mayor Yoo Seong-hoon) announced it will support 32 all-day care facilities (local children’s centers, neighborhood care centers, and Pogun centers) struggling due to the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic with quarantine supplies.

By the end of October, Geumcheon-gu plans to distribute one steam sterilizer and one non-contact automatic thermometer to each of the 32 all-day care facilities.

In May and September, due to staggered school attendance and full remote classes caused by COVID-19 spread, children’s center usage time increased, leading the district to provide additional operating expenses to prevent economic burdens from degrading care environments.

Mayor Yoo Seong-hoon said, “We are providing these quarantine supplies for children vulnerable to infectious diseases. We will continue efforts to provide healthy and safe care environments for children.”

For more information, contact Geumcheon-gu Office’s Education Support Division.

Gwanak-gu (Mayor Park Jun-hee) will operate the ‘Preschool Family Forest Festival’ at five local preschool forest experience centers as part of Seoul’s ‘Forest Play’ festival for young children.

‘Preschool Forest Experience Centers’ are forest education facilities equipped with forest experience facilities and shelters where children can enjoy playing and learning in the forest. Utilizing existing natural resources, they provide various forest experience and play facilities such as adventure playgrounds, insect hotels, and rock climbing walls.

Gwanak-gu has seven preschool forest experience centers registered with the Korea Forest Service, including Cheongryongsan Preschool Forest Experience Center, the most among Seoul’s districts.

The district prepared family programs for children who mainly stayed indoors due to COVID-19 and parents exhausted from home childcare to heal in nature.

From October 23 to November 14, weekend programs with unique themes will be conducted at five centers (Nakseongdae, Dang-gok, Samseong-dong, Seonwoo Park) under the guidance of preschool forest instructors.

At Cheongryongsan Preschool Forest Experience Center on October 23, three programs will be held: ‘Forestania,’ experiencing forest-related jobs; ‘Forest of Insects,’ searching for forest insects; and ‘Cheongryongsan Forest Games,’ using natural materials as playthings. During breaks, string quartet and gayageum performances are planned.

On October 30 at Nakseongdae Preschool Forest, ‘Nakseongdae Preschool Forest Here and There’ exploring Nakseongdae’s history and nearby gardens will be held; on November 6 at Dang-gok Preschool Forest, a forest experience linked to picture books titled ‘Dive into the Forest’; on November 7 at Samseong-dong Preschool Forest, making frames and eco-bags in ‘I Love the Forest’; and on November 13 at Seonwoo Park Preschool Forest, forest play including a spider web playground titled ‘Let’s Play in Seonwoo Forest’ will be conducted. One program per location will be sequentially implemented.

Most programs will be non-face-to-face, following guides and signboards for autonomous experience activities. To reduce COVID-19 infection risk, play facilities and teaching tools will be thoroughly disinfected before and after events, and hand sanitizing and temperature checks will be conducted before participation.

Residents wishing to participate can apply through the Seoul Metropolitan Government Public Reservation Service website (Education & Lectures → Nature/Science → ‘Preschool Forest Experience Center’). All programs are free.

Park Jun-hee, Mayor of Gwanak-gu, said, “I regret that opportunities for children to play joyfully in the forest have decreased due to prolonged social distancing. We prepared this to give joyful autumn memories to children and families and ask for active participation from interested residents.”

The festival will also release a choir video of the ‘Song4U Children’s Choir,’ a representative after-school program of the Yangcheon Innovation Education District, singing the original children’s song ‘Happy Because You Are Here.’ Recorded individually in a studio, the video expresses the choir members’ earnest wish for COVID-19 to end soon so they can sing together face-to-face.

Yeongdeungpo-gu (Mayor Chae Hyun-il) will hold the ‘Our Village Education Forum’ at 4 p.m. on the 21st to reflect the voices of village instructors and local residents in the Yeongdeungpo Innovation Education District project and to operate educational policies that resonate with public, private, and academic sectors, aiming for qualitative advancement.

The forum aims to review the achievements of the active operation of the Yeongdeungpo Innovation Education District, share blueprints and development plans for innovation education envisioned by students, parents, and village education activists, and discover more effective educational agendas to incorporate into future policies.

Education Superintendent Jo Hee-yeon of Seoul and Mayor Chae Hyun-il of Yeongdeungpo-gu, along with students, parents, teachers, and local resident representatives, will attend in person at the YDP Future Lifelong Learning Center auditorium, while about 40 participants including village instructors involved in the innovation education district project will communicate online via Zoom.

Educational agendas proposed at the forum will be classified into local, central, and national agendas. Since July, the district has formed a preparatory group for the forum, recruited participants, and operated ‘Star★Star Small Public Forums’ to share discussion agendas by dividing participants into five subcommittees (youth autonomy, parents, village schools, local specialized culture, education safety net) and by groups such as teachers and students.

Since its designation as a Seoul-type innovation education district in 2016, Yeongdeungpo-gu has strived to realize public-private-academic governance based on participation and cooperation of various stakeholders and to establish and operate an integrated education support system connecting schools, villages, and families under the vision of ‘a village and school where no child is left behind and all go together.’
