[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Soyoung] The story of a mother in her 70s who died of a cerebral hemorrhage two days after receiving the AstraZeneca (AZ) vaccine and left a gift for her son in case something happened before the vaccination has caused great sadness.
On the 19th, a post titled "The Last Gift from a Mother Who Passed Away After Vaccination" was published on the Blue House National Petition Board.
The petitioner A, who lives in Jincheon-gun, Chungcheongbuk-do, stated that his mother B (73) received the AZ vaccine on May 31 and passed away two days later on June 2. According to A, on the day of her death, B collapsed on the street around 4 p.m. while heading to pick up A’s 3-year-old daughter from daycare. Acquaintances and the village chief who found her performed CPR and called 119, but B, who was taken to the hospital, eventually died two hours later.
A explained, "The doctor said the cause of death was cerebral hemorrhage (subarachnoid hemorrhage) and suspected it was related to the vaccine," adding, "Considering the timing, the possibility of death caused by the vaccine is high, and the health center registered the case." He emphasized, "If my mother hadn’t received the vaccine that day, would she have died two days later? Before the vaccination, she was healthy enough to go alone to the field to plant green onions and lettuce and take care of her grandchildren. It is extremely frustrating and heartbreaking."
A later learned from an acquaintance who visited the funeral that his mother had jokingly said, "If something goes wrong after I get the vaccine, I have hidden 1 million won at home, so please be sure to tell my son."
He said, "I never thought those words would be her last will," and added, "After the funeral, we found an envelope of money under my father’s portrait in the wardrobe, and my family and I broke down in tears right there."
He continued, "It was the allowance of 100,000 won per month that I gave my mother, but she never bought herself a proper outfit and saved the leftover money little by little after buying snacks for the kids," adding, "Although times were tough, we cannot bring ourselves to use that money, so we are still keeping it."
A said, "It pains me deeply that she worked hard taking care of her grandchildren and us without proper filial respect and passed away so tragically," and shared, "After my mother’s death, my wife quit her job to focus on managing the household and raising our 3-year-old daughter. Our daughter looks for her grandmother more than her mother. The void left by my mother is immense."
He appealed, "My mother got vaccinated for the country, the people around her, and her grandchildren, but she returned as nothing but ashes," and added, "Please properly investigate my mother’s unjust death and listen to those who are suffering like me."
