Gyeongbuk Sangju City Advances 13.6 Billion KRW Water Supply Expansion Project in Hwabuk District

- Resolving Seasonal Household Water Shortages... Improving Quality of Life for Local Residents

[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Dongguk Lee] Sangju City, Gyeongbuk announced on the 18th that it will invest a total project cost of 13.6 billion KRW (9.5 billion KRW from the national government) over three years starting from 2022 to implement the ‘Hwabuk District Local Waterworks Expansion Project.’

The Hwabuk District Local Waterworks Expansion Project was selected as a new project under the 2022 National Balanced Development Special Account and is being implemented to supply clean tap water to six villages in Hwaseo-myeon, Hwabuk-myeon, and Hwanam-myeon areas of Sangju City.

This project plans to supply tap water by laying 36 km of water pipes and installing one water storage tank and two pumping stations.

According to Sangju City, the Hwabuk District (areas of Hwaseo, Hwabuk, and Hwanam myeon) is still a village water supply area (using groundwater and valley water) that does not receive local tap water, facing difficulties in smooth drinking water supply due to water shortages during dry seasons and self-management of water supply facilities.

With the installation of this pipeline, about 700 households in the Hwabuk area, which have been using small-scale village water supply facilities (groundwater and valley water), will be able to receive clear and clean tap water stably.

Mayor Youngseok Kang of Sangju said, “We will do our best to continuously promote the local waterworks expansion project to stably supply clear tap water to residents in remote mountainous areas who suffer inconvenience due to the lack of water supply.”

Sangju City is also currently implementing waterworks maintenance projects in areas such as Oeseo-myeon and Gonggeom-myeon, where small-scale water supply facilities are used due to the absence of local waterworks.
