On the 17th (local time), Facebook stated, "We believe the metaverse will provide new social and economic opportunities," Bloomberg reported.
The hiring plan will include highly skilled professional engineers. Facebook said, "Europe offers a great environment for tech companies to invest, with a large consumer market, top universities, and world-class talent," adding, "We hope to collaborate with EU countries to find the talent and markets we seek."
However, specific plans for the newly created metaverse were not disclosed.
This hiring plan comes as Facebook struggles amid critical scandals, service outages, and various regulations. The Washington Post (WP) analyzed Facebook's interest in the metaverse as "part of a broad effort to restore the company's reputation damaged by the government and to lead regulations on next-generation internet technologies."
Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook's CEO, plans to transform Facebook from a social media company into a metaverse company over the next five years. Facebook stated, "Like the internet, no single company can own or operate the metaverse," emphasizing that "the core of the metaverse is openness and interoperability."
