[Asia Economy Reporter Yu Je-hoon] Hyundai Motor Company simultaneously clinched the championship trophies in three world-class motorsport events held last weekend: WRC, WTCR, and PURE ETCR.
Hyundai announced on the 18th that at the 11th round of the 2021 WRC held from the 14th to 17th in Tarragona, Spain, Thierry Neuville and Dani Sordo of the Hyundai World Rally Team secured 1st and 3rd place respectively with the 'i20 Coupe WRC' rally car, achieving a double podium finish. With this victory, Hyundai reached a total of 20 wins in WRC history and claimed its third championship trophy of the season.
This season's Spanish rally was the third event composed of paved roads, and Hyundai once again proved the excellence of the i20 Coupe WRC by winning the Spanish rally following the Belgian rally.
During the same period, Hyundai won the second race of the two final races at the 6th round of the 2021 WTCR held at the Circuit de Pau-Arnos in France. WTCR is a global top-tier touring car championship featuring high-performance C-segment race cars from manufacturers such as Audi, Volkswagen, and Honda.
Jan Karel Vernay, competing with the Hyundai Elantra (Avante) N TCR, won the second final race held on the 17th, earning a total of 144 points and ranking 2nd in the driver standings. The point gap to the 1st place driver is 16 points.
Hyundai also won the electric vehicle racing event 'PURE ETCR' held in France during the same period. PURE ETCR is conducted with six race cars divided into two groups, A and B, running a total of four rounds, with rankings determined by the combined points.
Jan Karel Vernay, who won the WTCR race that day, competed with the Hyundai Veloster N ETCR, finishing 2nd in Round 1 of Group B, 1st in Round 2, and 1st in Round 4, accumulating a total of 72 points to claim victory. His teammate Augusto Farfus also ranked 1st in Group A, securing the runner-up position with 68 points.
A Hyundai Motor Company official said, "We are very pleased to have achieved the great feat of winning trophies in all three competitions over the weekend, thanks to Hyundai's solid driving performance," adding, "We will thoroughly prepare for the WRC, which will adopt hybrid powertrains starting next year, to widely promote Hyundai's excellent eco-friendly technology."
