[Asia Economy Reporter Suyeon Woo] Doosan Yeongang Foundation announced on the 17th that it held the '12th Doosan Yeongang Arts Award' ceremony on the 15th at Yeongang Hall, Doosan Art Center, Jongno-gu, Seoul. This year's awardees were director Seol Yujin (performance category) and the artist group 'Eobchae' (3-member team, art category).
The Doosan Yeongang Arts Award was established in 2010, the 100th anniversary of Yeongang (蓮崗) Park Doo-byeong, the founding chairman of Doosan, who emphasized the importance of talent. It is a program that selects and supports young artists under the age of 40 with high growth potential in the fields of performance and art.
The awardees receive benefits totaling approximately 270 million KRW. Each receives a prize of 30 million KRW, with the performance category winner receiving an additional 150 million KRW for new performance production costs, and the art category winner receiving 60 million KRW separately for exhibition expenses at Doosan Gallery.
Seol, the performance category winner, said, "As long as I live here and now, I will continue to ponder why a human being should be free from something, and how and what to love, and try to create it through theater."
The art category winner, Eobchae, said, "When the thought 'What is the use of it all, sending fake glass bottle letters in a vast net' lingered in the minds of the three of us, we heard the news of the award," adding, "Thank you for receiving it wherever the coordinates are."
Park Yong-hyun, chairman of the Doosan Yeongang Foundation, congratulated the winners and said, "2021 is still a difficult time for all of us and an even harsher time for artists," adding, "I hope this award will be a comfort and encouragement to those who will lead our culture and arts in the future."
