[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Suhwan] Lee In-young, Minister of Unification, stated on the 16th, "We will focus our efforts and preparations to restart the peace process on the Korean Peninsula."
Minister Lee attended the forum "Gangwon Residents Speak of Peace," jointly hosted by the Ministry of Unification and Gangwon Province, and said, "The government will carefully and calmly observe the situation on the Korean Peninsula while working to develop inter-Korean relations."
He added, "Since the North Korea-U.S. summit in Hanoi ended with no deal in 2019, dialogue between South and North Korea and between North Korea and the U.S. had been halted for quite some time. However, with the restoration of the inter-Korean communication hotline on the 4th, the basic conditions for resuming dialogue between the two Koreas have been established."
He emphasized, "I hope that the G20 summit at the end of this month, the 30th anniversary of the adoption of the inter-Korean Basic Agreement in December, and the Beijing Winter Olympics in February next year will serve as opportunities to restore inter-Korean relations and make a new leap toward peace."
One hundred Gangwon residents participated online from home in the forum held to spread a consensus for peace.
