Gumi University in Gyeongbuk Hosts Global Speech Contest ... Son Jae-in Wins Grand Prize in Student Category

[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Dongguk Lee] Gumi University held the '2021 Global Speech Contest' on the 13th to improve the foreign language skills of enrolled students and high school students.

The contest, held at the Seongsil Hall audiovisual room of Gumi University, is an event jointly hosted by the University Job Center and the International Exchange Office. It has been held annually since 2019 with the purpose of strengthening the global capabilities of enrolled students and enhancing the foreign language skills of high school students.

This year, submissions were accepted in two categories: enrolled students and local high school students, with 23 participants including 16 enrolled students and 7 high school students.

The presentation topics were 'My Appearance Two Years Later' (common), 'My Gumi University' (enrolled students), and 'The College Life I Wish For' (high school students). Participants selected a topic and submitted a video speech within 3 minutes in English, Japanese, or Chinese, along with a script for the presentation.

On the day of the contest, presentations were conducted on-site, and for those unable to attend, judging was based on the submitted video materials.

Student Son Jae-in (1st year, Department of Hotel Tourism and Aviation Services), who presented the topic 'My Gumi University' in English, won the grand prize in the enrolled students category. High school students Yoon Da-young and Song Saerom (Korea International Christian School), who jointly presented 'The College Life I Wish For' in English, won the grand prize in the high school students category. Grand prize winners received a certificate and a prize of 500,000 won.

In addition, 5 students received the Excellence Award, 8 received the Merit Award, and 7 received the Encouragement Award, all receiving certificates and prize money.

Lee Seung-hwan, head of the Gumi University Job Center, said, "Due to COVID-19, overseas training was completely canceled, and foreign language special lectures were reduced, making it difficult for our young people to cultivate global capabilities. I hope this global speech contest will be an opportunity to improve global mindset and foreign language skills."
