Army Soldiers Also Issued Military Identification Cards

Until now, soldiers have faced various inconveniences as they had no way to prove their identity when leaving the base for leave or other reasons.

According to Min Hong-cheol, a member of the National Assembly's National Defense Committee from the Democratic Party of Korea, on the 13th, the Army plans to establish a system that certifies military personnel identity through the Ministry of Science and ICT's MyData demonstration service project. Military officers and non-commissioned officers receive government employee ID cards. However, soldiers had no separate ID and had to prove their identity with leave permits during outings, overnight stays, or leave. This caused inconveniences such as not being able to smoothly receive soldier discount benefits provided by various facilities.

Rep. Min said, "According to Article 4 of the National Military Organization Act, Article 2 of the Military Personnel Act, and Article 2 of the State Public Officials Act, soldiers are legally military personnel, but giving ID cards only to military officers is discriminatory," adding, "ID cards should be distributed to all soldiers to eliminate discrimination with officers and to foster pride."
