'The Joy of Contemplation at Chaekgeori'... Gyeongui Line Chaekgeori 5th Anniversary Book Festival

Simultaneous Events from 19th to 24th at Gyeongui Line Book Street and Online on the Theme of 'The Power of Reasoning'... Special Exhibition of 'Park Wan-seo's House,' Online Book Talk, Poet Recital, and Various Experience Programs

'The Joy of Contemplation at Chaekgeori'... Gyeongui Line Chaekgeori 5th Anniversary Book Festival At 7 p.m. on the 19th, a book talk titled "Reflecting on Memories of Love" featuring writer Ho Wonsuk (right), daughter of author Park Wan-seo, and announcer Lee Geum-hee will be premiered on the Gyeongui Line Book Street YouTube channel (BOOK On-Air).


[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Mapo-gu (Mayor Yudonggyun) announced that it will hold the ‘Author Day Book Festival’ to celebrate the 5th anniversary of the opening of ‘Gyeongui Line Book Street,’ created in 2016 on the former Gyeongui Line railway site near Hongdae, from the 19th to the 24th both online and offline.


The theme of this festival, hosted by Mapo-gu Gyeongui Line Book Street (Korean Writers' Association), is ‘The Power of Thought.’ Over six days starting from the 19th, about 40 programs including online author book talks, various planned exhibitions, recitation sessions, and non-face-to-face experience programs will be held around Gyeongui Line Book Street and online. Fifty-nine authors and artists, including Ho Wonsuk and Monk Wonje, will participate and engage with citizens.

At 7 p.m. on the 19th, the book talk ‘Reflecting on Memories of Love’ featuring author Ho Wonsuk, daughter of writer Park Wan-seo, and announcer Lee Geum-hee will be premiered on the Gyeongui Line Book Street YouTube channel (BOOK On-Air). On this day, Ho Wonsuk will share warm memories of her mother, writer Park Wan-seo, with viewers.


Also, the book talk ‘A Journey to Reflect on Myself’ by Monk Wonje, famous for his world tour title covering five continents and 45 countries, and announcer Lee Geum-hee will be broadcast on YouTube at 6 p.m. on the 23rd to reach citizens.


Additionally, online author lectures by PD Jung Hye-yoon, author of ‘Happy Words in a Sad World,’ and artist Jung Eun-hye, an art therapist and ecological artist from Jeju, will be held on the 20th and 24th respectively to aid citizens’ reflection. Online recitation sessions by poets Kim Hyun and Lee Seo-ha, as well as citizen writers, on the 21st and 22nd are expected to deepen the autumn atmosphere.


Various non-face-to-face experience programs that citizens can enjoy at home with their families have also been prepared. To participate in the live ‘Reflect Together’ experience programs on online ZOOM, such as ▲making pop-up books ▲mandala meditation ▲making cup droplets, advance reservation is required through the Naver reservation page (Gyeongui Line Book Street).


Over 100 Citizens, 26 Artists ? Reflecting on Exhibitions


To commemorate the 10th anniversary of writer Park Wan-seo, a special planned exhibition ‘Park Wan-seo’s House Exhibition’ will be presented as an experiential exhibition that allows visitors to see, hear, and read about the author’s life. This exhibition can be viewed by up to five people per hour through prior application and is prepared to meet memories of Park Wan-seo’s life, who constantly reflected on women and literature.


In addition, throughout the outdoor areas of Gyeongui Line Book Street, the ‘100 Books Recommended by Citizen Book Curators Exhibition’ and the ‘Book Street Art Sculpture Exhibition’ in collaboration with Crown Haitai will be held, waiting for citizens on autumn walking paths. The list of 100 books selected by book curators nationwide under the theme ‘Books that Fostered My Inner Reflection’ will also be released later on the Gyeongui Line Book Street SNS and website.


The ‘Book Street TOON Exhibition,’ where visitors can enjoy works by 18 Instagramtoon artists including Isum and Sogeumtoon under the keywords ‘Reflection, Meditation, Contemplation, Healing, Consolation,’ and a digital planned exhibition capturing their works on video will add depth to the autumn night book culture festival.

Enjoy Various On-site Festival Programs and Events


Safe on-site festival programs with advance reservations have also been abundantly prepared. At the Future Walk booth, the ‘My Echo Book’ program allows participants to create an audiobook by reading a cherished book passage they want to share with someone special in their own voice. Poet Kim Eun-ji, author of ‘Sweet Potato and Thank You Share Two Letters,’ will also meet citizens one-on-one in the ‘Book Pharmacy’ program to prescribe books suited to their concerns.


Moreover, various events such as a book purchase receipt event, where prizes are given based on the amount spent at bookstores within Gyeongui Line Book Street during the festival period, will be held in various locations.


Mayor Yudonggyun of Mapo-gu said, “This Gyeongui Line Book Street festival holds significance in finding peace of mind through books and culture and relieving residents’ fatigue accumulated from the COVID-19 pandemic,” and added, “We hope many citizens will show interest and participate in the 5th anniversary event of the Book Street opening.”
