5-Year 국민연금 Fraudulent Claims Total 54.6 Billion Won

[Asia Economy Reporter Park So-yeon] It has been revealed that the total amount improperly received over the past five years by individuals who were not eligible or lost eligibility to receive the National Pension reached 55 billion KRW.

According to data received from the National Pension Service by Shin Hyun-young, a member of the National Assembly's Health and Welfare Committee (Democratic Party), the total amount recovered from improper National Pension claims between 2016 and 2020 was 54.6 billion KRW.

By year, except for 2018 (approximately 9.2 billion KRW), the amount recovered from improper claims exceeded 11 billion KRW each year.

Looking at the types of improper claims over the five years, 'benefit selection' due to overlapping benefits or split pensions accounted for about half, totaling 25 billion KRW (45.9%).

Cases where recipients failed to report or delayed reporting facts related to their eligibility, such as not reporting the death of the recipient, amounted to 19.2 billion KRW (35.2%). Improper claims due to changes in details accounted for 9.5 billion KRW (17.3%), and intentional fraudulent claims amounted to 880 million KRW (1.6%).

Additionally, the amount recovered from overseas beneficiaries increased 2.4 times, from 56 million KRW in 2016 to 135.85 million KRW last year.

The National Pension Service has yet to recover 2.9 billion KRW of the improper claim amounts.

Assembly member Shin Hyun-young emphasized, "Failure to promptly verify changes in eligibility can lead to an increase in improper claims," and added, "A system should be established to verify frequently occurring eligibility changes and fraudulent claims through organic cooperation among related agencies."
