Significantly Increased in 20s to 51.9%
[Asia Economy Reporter Oh Ju-yeon] The support rate for the People Power Party has once again surpassed its highest level. It appears that the opposition party's support base has become more solidified amid the Daejang-dong political situation.
On the 12th, Asia Economy commissioned Win-G Korea Consulting to conduct a public opinion survey (100% mobile phone virtual numbers, automated response) targeting 1,023 voters aged 18 and older nationwide from the 9th to 10th. When asked about their "supporting political party," 40.9% answered the People Power Party, while 36.6% chose the Democratic Party of Korea. The gap between the two parties was 4.3 percentage points, within the margin of error. Compared to the previous survey (August 25-26), the People Power Party rose by 0.8 percentage points, whereas the Democratic Party fell by 0.3 percentage points.
The People Power Party has maintained an upward trend over the last five surveys since the first week of August (August 7-8), rising from 30.1% → 33.8% → 34.7% → 40.1%, increasing by 10 percentage points in just over two months. Notably, by age group, the party received high support among those in their 20s and those aged 60 and above. Support among people in their 20s was 51.9%, up 8.1 percentage points from the previous survey (43.8%). This is a 21.1 percentage point difference compared to the Democratic Party’s 30.8% support in the same age group.
Regarding recent Daejang-dong preferential treatment allegations, some expected that the controversy over former lawmaker Kwak Sang-do’s son’s 5 billion won retirement bonus and former Minister Cho Kuk’s child’s forged certificate scandal would provoke anger among young people in their 20s. However, it appears that these issues did not affect party support in reality.
By region, the People Power Party led the Democratic Party in Seoul, Daegu·Gyeongbuk, and Busan·Ulsan·Gyeongnam, while the Democratic Party was ahead in Gyeonggi·Incheon, Chungcheong, Honam, and Gangwon·Jeju regions. Support for parties other than the two major ones was as follows: People’s Party (6.4%), Open Democratic Party (5.9%), and Justice Party (2.5%). The proportion of non-supporters (including those unsure) has steadily decreased from 15.5% in the third week of August to 13.7%, then 7.9%, and finally 6.4%. This is interpreted as consolidation of supporters for each party as the presidential election season intensifies.
This survey was conducted by Asia Economy through Win-G Korea Consulting targeting voters aged 18 and older nationwide from the 9th to 10th, with 1,023 respondents and an overall response rate of 7.1%. The survey method was wireless ARS using 100% mobile phone virtual numbers. The sample was extracted using weighted values (cell weighting) by gender, age, and region based on the resident registration population as of the end of January 2021 from the Ministry of the Interior and Safety. The sampling error is ±3.1 percentage points at a 95% confidence level.
