[Asia Economy Reporter Hwang Sumi] The recent update on a British man in his 30s who squandered his entire fortune on alcohol and drugs after winning a lottery worth about 18 billion won has become a hot topic.
On the 10th (local time), the UK Daily Mail reported that Michael Carroll (38), who won 9.7 million pounds (about 18 billion won) from a lottery ticket he bought for 1 pound in 2002 and became wealthy, has recently reunited with his ex-wife after their divorce. He was only 19 years old when he won the lottery.
According to the report, Carroll, who worked as a cleaner in Norfolk, eastern England, indulged in entertainment such as alcohol, drugs, sports cars, and orgy parties after winning the lottery, squandering his fortune.
Eventually, he declared bankruptcy in 2013 and divorced his wife Sandra Aiken (38) in 2008.
In a past interview with the media, Sandra said, "I left him because (Carroll) wasted 10 million pounds on alcohol and drug addiction and was cheating with prostitutes."
However, Carroll continued his extravagant lifestyle even after the divorce. He adorned himself with luxury goods and jewelry and even claimed to have slept with "4,000 women."
Nevertheless, it is known that they recently met again, remarried, and are living in Belfast, Northern Ireland.
The UK Daily Record quoted a source saying, "Carroll has calmed down a lot and is now living a fairly decent life and working hard."
After declaring bankruptcy in 2013, Carroll lived on unemployment benefits and spent difficult times moving between shelters for the homeless while looking for a job. He worked at a biscuit factory and a slaughterhouse, and in 2019, he even worked seven days a week as a coal miner in Scotland.
Regarding this, Carroll said in a media interview, "It's not wrong. I spent the best 10 years of my life for 1 pound. I am sure I do not regret the past."
