Commemorating "White Cane Safety Day" on the 15th, Let's Walk Together
[Hampyeong=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Chunsu] Hampyeong County has taken steps to improve the welfare and awareness of visually impaired people in the region.
On the 11th, Hampyeong County in Jeollanam-do announced that it held a ‘White Cane Basic Mobility Training’ for visually impaired people and their guides at Hampyeong Expo Park in observance of ‘White Cane Safety Day’ designated by the World Blind Union.
This training, conducted as part of a customized welfare program, was designed to foster the independence and sense of accomplishment of visually impaired individuals, helping them to become self-reliant members of society.
During the training, led by a professional mobility instructor, visually impaired participants learned safer and more independent walking techniques using white canes together with their guides.
County Governor Lee Sang-ik said, “We will continue to develop various programs to enhance the welfare of visually impaired people,” and added, “We will do our best to create a warm Hampyeong where people with and without disabilities live together harmoniously.”
Meanwhile, the ‘white cane’ is a mobility aid exclusively used by visually impaired people worldwide, distinguished from canes used by the elderly or other disabled individuals. The Road Traffic Act stipulates that drivers must exercise caution toward visually impaired people carrying white canes.
