[Asia Economy Reporter Yujin Cho] Major U.S. big tech companies such as Amazon, Google, and Microsoft (MS) are expected to attend a White House meeting focused on quantum technology, according to major foreign media reports on the 5th (local time).
The meeting is scheduled to discuss key practical applications of quantum computers, with Boeing, Honeywell, Intel, and IBM also participating.
Since taking office in January this year, U.S. President Joe Biden has emphasized cybersecurity and targeting new growth industries. Convening big tech companies regarding quantum computer technology, known as the "dream computer," is seen as part of the technology security policy.
Charlie Taehan, Deputy Director for Quantum Information Science at the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, explained, "We really want to seriously focus on what quantum computer applications can truly contribute to our society in the future."
Quantum computers are next-generation computer technology capable of solving problems that current supercomputers find difficult within seconds, with research underway on practical applications in healthcare, finance, and artificial intelligence.
In particular, it is one of the core technologies in the U.S.-China technological hegemony competition, with both countries investing heavily in its development.
Since the Biden administration, the White House has elevated and responded to the advanced information technology (IT) industry as a strategic core issue of national security by convening global semiconductor giants such as Samsung Electronics, TSMC, and Intel multiple times for meetings.
