[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] Jeonnam Fire Headquarters (Chief Ma Jaeyoon) has urged caution regarding mountain accidents as the number of hikers enjoying autumn hiking increases ahead of the peak foliage season.
According to Jeonnam Fire Headquarters on the 5th, a total of 1,176 mountain accidents occurred in the province over the past three years (397 cases in 2018, 383 cases in 2019, and 396 cases in 2020).
This year, as of last month, 302 cases have occurred, with the types being general distress 90 cases (29.8%), slips and falls 48 cases (15.9%), exhaustion and dehydration 33 cases (10.9%), and personal illness 28 cases (9.3%), in that order.
Last year as well, 31% (123 cases) of all mountain accidents between September and November were concentrated in the autumn season, so the Fire Headquarters is implementing safety measures for mountain accidents, including operating safety keepers on 20 major hiking trails in the province.
They also inspect and manage hiking trail safety facilities such as simple rescue first aid kits and location guide signs, and actively use SNS to promote and educate on accident prevention.
To prevent mountain accidents in autumn, hikers should thoroughly prepare before hiking, use designated trails, and pay attention to sufficient stretching and clothing to maintain body temperature.
Chief Ma Jaeyoon said, “As mountain accidents are occurring due to the recent increase in autumn hikers, we ask for special caution by following various safety rules.”
