[Asia Economy Reporter Jeon Jin-young] The leadership of the Democratic Party of Korea sharply criticized former Prosecutor General Yoon Seok-yeol, the opposition presidential candidate, over the controversy surrounding the '王 character'.
On the morning of the 5th, Yoon Ho-jung, the floor leader, said at the National Assembly's audit countermeasure meeting, "It is truly disheartening that policy competition has disappeared in the primary of the main opposition party and only superstitious debates are in full swing."
Yoon Ho-jung criticized, "There is a candidate who draws the character 王 (king) on his palm, a candidate who only wears red underwear, a candidate who changed his name based on a fortune teller's advice, and even a candidate's wife who also changed her name following a fortune teller's words. This is truly archaic and absurd. I suspect they are dreaming of regime change not through the People Power Party but through the power of superstition."
Park Wan-joo, the chair of the Policy Committee, also pointed out, "Former Prosecutor General Yoon not only caused a superstition controversy by writing the character for king on his palm during the primary debate but is also deceiving the public with a petty false explanation that he washes mainly his fingers."
Park emphasized, "Former Prosecutor General Yoon must stop remarks that drag the level of Korean politics to the bottom. There is a saying that a needle thief becomes a cow thief, and seeing the chain of lies, it seems that former Prosecutor General Yoon is already becoming a very big thief."
He continued, "Even candidates from the same party are criticizing former Prosecutor General Yoon's behavior in unison, calling him a candidate who believes in primitive elections and superstition. A deep reflection is needed on whether he has the basic understanding and qualifications for the presidency."
He added, "The people do not want shamanistic politics that rely on superstition and magic," and requested, "As someone challenging for the presidency, please refrain from any further actions that degrade the dignity of politics."
