Harvesting Pears Grown by Little Farmers in Jungnang-gu and Sharing with Neighbors

[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Jungnang-gu (Mayor Ryu Kyung-gi) announced that it will hold a Meokgol Cheongsilbae pear harvesting and sharing event with children at Bonghwasan Natural Experience Park from the 6th to the 8th.

Since 2016, the district has developed a pear orchard of about 10,000㎡ within Bonghwasan Neighborhood Park into a natural experience park and has been operating a pear tree adoption program targeting local kindergartens and daycare centers.

Children can directly experience the process from flowering to fruit bearing on the trees, which has led to active participation every year.

This year, 127 pear trees were adopted by 81 institutions, and seasonal experiences such as attaching pear tree name tags, observing pear blossoms, and bagging the fruit were conducted.

Through this event timed with the harvest season, children will have the opportunity to harvest pears they have nurtured with their small hands over seven months.

Some of the harvest will be donated to social welfare institutions so that children can also learn the joy of sharing. Depending on social distancing levels, only a minimum number of participants will join the pear harvesting at designated times, and the event will be held on a small scale.

Ryu Kyung-gi, Mayor of Jungnang-gu, said, “Through this experience, children will feel the importance of nature and life and it will be an opportunity for them to grow into healthy individuals. We will continue to prepare various natural experience education programs so that children in the city can develop creativity and sensitivity.”

The district is working hard to promote the local specialty ‘Meokgol Cheongsilbae’ by completing trademark registration last year and developing the brand. The name ‘Meokgol Cheongsilbae’ was created by combining ‘Meokgol,’ the old name of Muk-dong, and ‘Cheongsilbae,’ the progenitor pear of Meokgol pears from the Joseon Dynasty.
