[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Choi Soon-kyung] The Sancheong Youth Forum in Gyeongnam held one-person protests and issued statements on the 28th at 10 a.m. in front of Donguibogam Village, Sancheong County Council, Sancheong Police Station, Sinan-myeon Office, and Danseong-myeon Office regarding allegations of corruption involving relatives of provincial and county council members.

The Youth Forum pointed out the suspicions related to relatives of elected officials and the various political faction fights arising ahead of the upcoming election season.

Through the statement, they said, “We urge a thorough investigation into the corruption allegations involving elected officials such as provincial and county council members, and the truth must be revealed to the residents through proper police investigations,” criticizing the recent behavior of elected officials.

They added, “Despite recent allegations of corruption involving relatives of provincial and county council members, they remain silent and unresponsive. Our Sancheong Youth Forum, as well as the residents, are greatly disappointed by their unrepentant behavior, which does not even include a minimum apology,” criticizing them.

The Youth Forum stated, “Young people who struggle to make a living day by day feel relative deprivation and frustration due to their tremendous business acumen, and we question whether this is the right direction for Sancheong to move forward,” and mentioned, “Elected officials, who are required to have high morality, showing behavior that seems to prioritize their own gain over policies is a great disappointment to the residents.”

They also said, “The same applies to their relatives’ affairs. Is it normal for elected officials to claim no relation when their relatives gain enormous benefits? Therefore, a thorough investigation of the elected officials and their relatives should be conducted. Even if they are cleared by police and prosecution investigations, the residents do not truly believe there is no connection,” they asserted.

Members pointed out, “Despite the fallout from the Deoksan Dam documents in Busan, the Sancheong provincial council member has not responded at all. Is this really the desirable conduct of a Sancheong provincial council member? What exactly is the council member doing instead of working for Sancheong?”

The Sancheong Youth Forum demanded, “Currently, Sancheong County is already bruised by political faction fights ahead of the upcoming election season. We express deep regret and call for these disputes to stop and for sincere leaders who can develop Sancheong.”

They added, “Residents must also prioritize public interest over private gain and unite to elect candidates with policies that can create a wealthy Sancheong, such as population growth and quality job creation, to make Sancheong a desirable place to live.”
