[Asia Economy Reporter Geum Bo-ryeong] The People Power Party has filed a complaint against Gyeonggi Province Governor Lee Jae-myung and related parties involved in the 'Daejang-dong Development Project Favoritism' allegations for breach of trust under the Act on the Aggravated Punishment of Specific Economic Crimes.

On the 28th, People Power Party lawmakers Kim Hyung-dong and Park Soo-young, along with Deputy Chairman of the Legal Advisory Committee Jeong Sang-hwan, visited the Supreme Prosecutors' Office in Seocho-gu, Seoul, and submitted a complaint against Governor Lee, former Seongnam Urban Development Corporation Planning Director Yoo Dong-gyu, Kim Man-bae, the major shareholder of Hwacheon Daeyu Asset Management (Hwacheon Daeyu), and eight other related parties from Hwacheon Daeyu and Cheonhwa-dongin.

The main charge against them is breach of trust under the Act on the Aggravated Punishment of Specific Economic Crimes. It is alleged that during the selection process of private developers for the Daejang-dong development by Seongnam Urban Development Corporation, preferential treatment was given to the consortium including Hwacheon Daeyu, and that massive profits were funneled to Hwacheon Daeyu and Cheonhwa-dongin, which hold a 7% stake, causing financial damage to Seongnam City and its citizens.

The People Power Party is also urging for an investigation by a special prosecutor. On the same day, Floor Leader Kim Ki-hyun stated at the party's countermeasure meeting, "There are plenty of reasons to appoint a special prosecutor. We should not delay and appoint a special prosecutor to resolve all public suspicions." He added, "If the Democratic Party of Korea resorts to all sorts of tricks and double standards regarding Governor Lee's Daejang-dong gate, the public will never stand by quietly." Party leader Lee Jun-seok also appeared on YTN Radio's 'Hwang Bo-seon's Starting Morning' and said, "At this moment, it would be very difficult for the police and prosecution to investigate allegations against a leading ruling party presidential candidate ahead of the presidential election." He continued, "Therefore, it is right to properly investigate these suspicions through a special prosecutor or a more neutral institution."
