Korean Air Completes Company-wide IT System Migration to AWS Cloud... "First Major Airline Worldwide" Jang Sung-hyun, Vice President of Marketing IT Division at Korean Air, is explaining the company's IT system migration to the cloud-based Amazon Web Services (AWS) and its vision through a media briefing presentation on the 28th.

[Asia Economy Reporter Dongwoo Lee] Korean Air announced on the 28th that it has completed the migration of all IT systems to the cloud-based Amazon Web Services (AWS). This comes three years after officially announcing the company-wide IT system cloud migration plan in November 2018. Korean Air is the first major global airline to complete the migration of all company-wide IT systems to the cloud.

With the migration of IT systems to the cloud, Korean Air can now respond proactively to market conditions and changes in demand. The use of cloud technology and data enables improved operational efficiency and innovation in customer service. The recent increase in demand for quarantine measures and contactless services due to the COVID-19 pandemic also strengthened the need for cloud transition.

Korean Air, together with AWS and AWS’s domestic partner LG CNS, gradually migrated various IT systems including data, network, and security systems previously operated in its on-premises data centers to AWS cloud, enhancing efficiency and simplifying IT management.

Following the completion of the cloud migration, the company plans to drive innovation in management systems based on AWS’s cloud capabilities such as data analytics and machine learning, including strengthening passenger services, improving convenience in reservation and ticketing systems, and enhancing weather forecasting accuracy.

It will also improve the accuracy of customer demand forecasting and expand personalized services. By adopting the ‘Cloud Machine Learning Management Service,’ Korean Air manages the construction, training, and application of machine learning models within a single environment to support accurate demand and statistical forecasting. In particular, it is expected to enable timely and appropriate actions for customers based on predictions of flight delays due to severe weather and aircraft maintenance time.

The customer data platform built on AWS cloud will enable personalized customer services tailored to individual customer characteristics. Customer touchpoints will also be strengthened. The website and mobile app are expected to be 90% faster than before by utilizing AWS microservices. The existing four-step ticket purchase process has been simplified to two steps, and development is underway to enable one-stop ticket purchasing.

While promoting the migration of company-wide IT systems to the cloud, Korean Air introduced the AWS Innovation Builder Program. It plans to provide basic cloud technology education to about 500 employees and, based on this, strengthen collaboration between business and technical divisions, build idea capabilities using AWS cloud, and make company-wide efforts to disseminate cloud adoption.

Jang Sung-hyun, Vice President of Korean Air, said, "By acquiring digital capabilities that can maximize customer satisfaction, we have taken a step closer to our goal of becoming the world’s most beloved airline." He added, "We have moved beyond just solving strategic problems and can now lead service innovation more quickly and efficiently through the cloud."
