Seoul Metro Transfers 45 Years of Subway Safety Know-How to Mongolia

Online Railway Safety Training for Mongolia's Ministry of Road and Transport Development in Collaboration with KOICA

[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] Seoul Metro announced on the 28th that starting from the 27th, it will conduct an online training program titled ‘Support for Establishing a Mid- to Long-term Roadmap and Implementation Plan for the Advancement of Railway Safety in Mongolia’ in cooperation with the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA).

This training is part of KOICA’s global training project (CIAT, Seed), aimed at nurturing talents who will lead economic development in the international community. It targets public officials, technicians, researchers, and policymakers from developing countries.

The training, conducted over 10 days for 21 officials from the Mongolian Ministry of Road and Transport Development (MRTD) and its affiliated organizations, will deliver Seoul Metro’s accumulated expertise gained from operating urban railways since the opening of Subway Line 1 in 1974. Even after the training concludes, Seoul Metro will provide know-how on overall railway safety through a dedicated online channel for trainees who wish to continue learning.

In May 2019, Seoul Metro held a ‘Global Railway Academy’ for safety managers affiliated with the Ulaanbaatar Railway Authority in Mongolia. The program covered safety systems applied in the Seoul subway, including ▲workplace safety rules and related regulations ▲inspection of mechanical equipment analysis and control system (SAMBA) and smart safety experience center ▲health and safety management systems ▲disaster and accident prevention and research ▲workplace hazard measurement and inspection evaluation ▲worker stress management.

President Kim Sang-beom said, “We have maintained a special relationship with Mongolia since we began exchanges two years ago. I am pleased that we can share the safety expertise that Seoul Metro has diligently accumulated with the staff of the Mongolian Ministry of Road and Transport Development. This training will also serve as an opportunity for us to review and strengthen our own capabilities.”
