[Asia Economy Reporter Donghyun Choi] CJ ENM's third global co-produced musical, Moulin Rouge, swept a total of 10 categories at the 74th Tony Awards, including the Best Musical award, earning the honor of the most wins.
At the 74th Tony Awards held on the 26th (local time) at the Winter Garden Theatre on Broadway in New York, Moulin Rouge won the Best Musical award after fierce competition with musicals such as Jagged Little Pill, based on the music of female singer-songwriter Alanis Morissette, and Tina, which depicts the life and music of legendary Black musician Tina Turner.
In addition, Moulin Rouge took home awards in 10 categories including Best Actor, Best Featured Actor, Best Scenic Design, Best Costume Design, Best Lighting Design, Best Sound Design, Best Direction, Best Choreography, and Best Orchestrations, setting the record for the most wins this year. With this, CJ ENM strengthened its position as a global producer by winning its second Tony Award with Moulin Rouge, following its first global co-production Kinky Boots.

The musical Moulin Rouge is a jukebox musical that tells the love story between a singer and a young composer at the club ‘Moulin Rouge’ in 1890s Paris, France. It officially opened on July 25, 2019 (local time) and was suspended last March due to the complete shutdown of Broadway in the U.S., but resumed performances on the 24th. It continues to generate a passionate response with hit pop music reinterpreted from the original film and songs by globally famous pop stars such as Madonna, Elton John, Sia, Beyonc?, Lady Gaga, Adele, and Rihanna.
CJ ENM participated as a co-producer from the early planning and development stages of the musical Moulin Rouge through its global network built over more than 10 years on Broadway and West End by co-producing musicals such as Kinky Boots, The Bodyguard, and Back to the Future. CJ ENM is also demonstrating its global producing capabilities by participating in the North American tour and West End performances of Moulin Rouge in addition to Broadway. Furthermore, as a full member of the Broadway League, CJ ENM has been participating in the Tony Awards judging panel since 2019 as the first Korean company, solidifying its position as a global producing company.
