[Gangjin＝Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Yong-su] On the 27th, Gangjin-gun, Jeollanam-do announced that Baegundong Garden was selected as a ‘Safe Autumn Non-Face-to-Face Tourist Destination’ by the Korea Tourism Organization.

Gangjin Baegundong Garden is called one of the three major gardens of Honam along with Soswaewon in Damyang and Seyeonjeong in Bogildo, Wando, and is an important cultural heritage that reveals the reclusive culture of Joseon scholars.

It is a garden created by Lee Dam-ro (聃老, 1627?1701), a mid-Joseon recluse, who came and inscribed ‘Baegundong (白雲洞)’ on a rock beside the valley and constructed the garden. It features a layout that appropriately combines nature and artificial elements, with a well-organized structure, preserving the original form of traditional Korean gardens.

Later, after Jeong Yak-yong (Dasan) visited here in 1812, he was captivated by the beautiful scenery and had his disciple, Cho Ui Seonsa, paint the Baegundong painting, and left poems and writings praising the twelve scenic spots of Baegundong Garden. Based on this, the appearance of the historic traditional villa was recreated.

In addition, near Baegundong Garden, there is Gangjin Tea Garden, which spreads widely over 33.3 hectares under Mt. Wolchulsan, and the thousand-year-old temple Muisa, known for its simple beauty, making it a tourist destination where families and couples can enjoy autumn together.

Lee Seung-ok, the county governor, said, “Gangjin-gun, along with Baegundong Garden, is the number one destination for exploring the southern region where you can enjoy tourist spots such as Gaudo Island, Gangjin Bay Ecological Park, Dasan Chodang, and taste local cuisine like Korean set meals, Hoichuntang, and grilled fish dishes.” He added, “We recommend a trip to feel the autumn atmosphere in beautiful and clean Gangjin.”
