[Asia Economy Reporter Kang Juhee] The recent update on the pizza shop owner who gifted pizza to a single father unable to celebrate his daughter's birthday due to financial difficulties has been revealed.
On the 24th, SBS's 'Who Story' aired an update on Hwang Jinseong, the pizza shop owner in Incheon who performed a good deed for a single-parent family and received what is called a 'Donzzul' (a blend of the words 'money' and 'scolding').
Previously, on the 12th of last month, SBS broadcasted the story of a single father, Mr. A, whose bank balance was only 571 won on his daughter's birthday, receiving a pizza gift from Mr. Hwang. After losing his job due to COVID-19 and facing financial hardship, Mr. A wanted to treat his daughter, who was celebrating her 7th birthday, to delicious food but had no financial means.
Mr. A asked Mr. Hwang's pizza shop, from which he occasionally ordered delivery, to send pizza with payment to be made later. Shortly after, a pizza arrived at Mr. A's home with a handwritten note from Mr. Hwang saying, "Don't feel burdened, and contact me again if your child wants more." After Mr. Hwang's good deed became known, the pizza shop reportedly experienced a surge in orders from all over the country.
Mr. Hwang said on the broadcast, "Suddenly, an unbelievable number of orders poured in. For about three days, it was overwhelming. Even after that, sales remained high for about two to three weeks," and added that he received a lot of support from citizens following last month's broadcast. When asked why he gave away pizza for free despite struggling in business, he humbly replied, "Even if it wasn't me, someone would have done something like this."
Mr. Hwang also revealed delivery receipts with messages of support from customers on the show. Among the approximately 100 receipts he carefully collected were notes saying, "Ordered to give a Donzzul. Always cheering for you," and "Thank you for helping children in need." Some customers from outside Incheon even ordered pizza but said they would not receive the food, leaving messages like, "It's a small amount, but please use it for a good cause."
Mr. Hwang stated that after much consideration, he decided to donate the money sent by customers to Mr. A. He explained, "Mr. A initially refused to accept the money but eventually did, and then he donated it again."
Netizens who saw this responded with comments such as, "The world is sustained thanks to such kind-hearted people," "Truly heartwarming and touching," and "One Donzzul is not enough. I will make you cry tears of joy two or three times more."
