[Asia Economy Reporter Jang Sehee] In the Gangwon region, 85 new COVID-19 cases were reported over the weekend, and the spread has not slowed down since the Chuseok holiday.

According to Gangwon Province health authorities on the 26th, as of 6 p.m. that day, the new confirmed cases were 12 in Gangneung, 8 in Wonju, 4 in Chuncheon, 2 each in Sokcho, Donghae, Pyeongchang, and Cheorwon, and 1 each in Taebaek, Hongcheon, Hoengseong, Jeongseon, Yangyang, and Samcheok, totaling 38 cases.

They tested positive through infections among family and acquaintances or contact with confirmed cases from other regions.

As the local spread did not subside, Sokcho City raised the social distancing level to Level 4 from the 27th until the 3rd of next month.

In Sokcho City, the spread continued mainly among some businesses and coworkers, resulting in about 70 confirmed cases in the past week.

Samcheok City also raised its social distancing to Level 3 starting that day.

This measure aims to block the spread caused by confirmed cases from visits to the metropolitan area after the Chuseok holiday and the influx of population from other regions due to in-person school classes.

The hospital bed occupancy rate in the province, including residential treatment centers, stands at 67% (as of midnight on the 26th).

Meanwhile, the cumulative number of COVID-19 confirmed cases in the Gangwon region has increased to 6,357.
