Joguk Targets "Kwak Sang-do's Son Worked 6 Years and Received 5 Billion Won in Severance Pay"

[Asia Economy Reporter Seoyoung Kwon] Former Minister of Justice Cho Kuk posted a message targeting the son of People Power Party lawmaker Kwak Sang-do.

Today (26th), former Minister Cho shared an article on his Facebook stating that Kwak's son, Mr. Kwak, received 5 billion KRW as severance pay from Hwacheon Daeyu, adding the comment "Received 5 billion KRW severance pay after 6 years of work (ages 25 to 31)." This is interpreted as expressing suspicion that Mr. Kwak, who joined Hwacheon Daeyu at the age of 25, received a monthly salary between 2 million and 3 million KRW but was paid 5 billion KRW as severance pay.

On the same day, former Minister Cho posted consecutively on his Facebook, including statements such as "5 billion KRW, about 8.7% of Hwacheon Daeyu's total dividends of 57.7 billion KRW, was paid as severance pay to one assistant manager." He also uploaded a photo showing that Kwak's son, as an assistant manager, receiving 5 billion KRW in severance pay ranks around 4th place among the top 20 severance pays of professional managers in the top 30 conglomerates in history.

Earlier, NoCut News reported that Mr. Kwak received 5 billion KRW as severance pay from Hwacheon Daeyu. According to NoCut News, Mr. Kwak, who majored in industrial design in college and urban and real estate development in graduate school, joined Hwacheon Daeyu in June 2015 and worked in the compensation team at the assistant manager level. It was also revealed that Hwacheon Daeyu was Mr. Kwak's first workplace.

According to the report, lawmaker Kwak stated that his son received money as a performance bonus but did not know the exact amount. Additionally, Lee Sung-moon, CEO of Hwacheon Daeyu, responded to the controversy by saying, "Since the employee resigned, it is natural to pay severance pay," and added, "There is nothing more to say except that it was paid legally through internal procedures."
