[Asia Economy Reporter Seongpil Cho] Following the Chuseok holiday, COVID-19 cases surged rapidly, resulting in a continuous increase in new confirmed cases on the 25th.

According to data compiled by health authorities from local governments on the 25th, as of 6 p.m., 1,980 new COVID-19 positive cases were reported nationwide. This is 209 fewer than the 2,189 cases reported at the same time the previous day, but 410 more than the 1,570 cases reported last Saturday (September 18).

By region, 1,410 cases (71.2%) were reported in the Seoul metropolitan area, and 570 cases (28.7%) in non-metropolitan areas. By city and province, the numbers are as follows: Seoul 672, Gyeonggi 576, Incheon 162, Daegu 91, Gyeongbuk 85, Gyeongnam 72, Chungnam 71, Busan 46, Chungbuk 42, Gangwon 39, Daejeon 35, Gwangju 33, Jeonbuk 22, Ulsan 14, Jeonnam 13, and Jeju 7. Cases were reported in 16 cities and provinces nationwide, excluding Sejong.

Since there is still time until midnight, when the tally closes, the number of new confirmed cases announced at 0:00 on the 26th may increase further, potentially approaching 3,000. However, since the number of tests tends to decrease on weekends, the increase may not be as large as expected. On the previous day, 1,084 additional cases were reported after 6 p.m., bringing the final total to 3,273.
