Huawei "Expect Meng Wanzhou's Safe Return... Will Protect Rights in US Trial"

[Asia Economy Reporter Seongpil Cho] Huawei, a major Chinese telecommunications equipment company, expressed hope that Meng Wanzhou, the vice chairwoman, would "return home safely and meet her family as soon as possible" following the lifting of her house arrest in Canada. In a statement released on the 25th, Huawei said, "We will continue to defend our rights in the ongoing lawsuit at the U.S. Eastern District Court of New York."

Earlier, U.S. prosecutors indicted Meng and Huawei in January 2019 on charges including violating U.S. sanctions against Iran by using a Hong Kong shell company to export equipment to Iran. After reaching a deferred prosecution agreement with the U.S. Department of Justice, Meng was released from house arrest in Canada on the 24th (local time) and immediately departed for China.

After the Canadian court's decision that day, Meng told reporters, "I am grateful to my motherland and its people for their support and help," adding, "My motherland was my greatest pillar." She is scheduled to arrive in Shenzhen, Guangdong Province, China, that evening aboard a Chinese government chartered plane, accompanied by staff from the Chinese Embassy in Canada and others seeing her off.
