Justice Party Gwangju Branch and Others Say "We Must Move Toward a Decarbonized Society"

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] On the 24th, four political parties including the Justice Party Gwangju City Party voiced a unified call to establish climate justice in light of the global climate strike.

Including the Justice Party Gwangju City Party, Gwangju Green Party, Basic Income Party Gwangju City Party, and Future Party Gwangju City Party, they gathered in front of Gwangju City Hall to demand ▲a 50% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 in Gwangju ▲achievement of 50% renewable energy in Gwangju ▲realization of a just transition ▲complete withdrawal of coal-fired power plants and new airport construction.

They stated, “Anyone can now foresee that if the Earth's average temperature rises more than 1.5℃ due to greenhouse gases emitted by humanity, greater disasters will unfold,” adding, “Decarbonization has now become an unavoidable mission of the times.”

However, they criticized, “The Korean government and corporations are postponing decarbonization by pushing various civil engineering projects, constructing new coal-fired power plants, and building new airports,” and “We strongly condemn the carbon-friendly government that only talks and the two conservative establishment parties.”

Finally, they declared, “We stand here to act together with climate citizens worldwide on the occasion of the global climate strike on the 24th,” and “We will actively fight against the government, National Assembly, and corporations that repeatedly commit climate villain acts to fundamentally change the current carbon-friendly and capital-friendly system.”
