[Asia Economy Reporter Yoo Byung-don] The Jongam Police Station in Seoul announced on the 24th that it has sent four supervisors, including the site manager and manager of the demolition company, the site manager of the construction company, and the supervisor, to the Seoul Northern District Prosecutors' Office without detention on charges of professional negligence resulting in death related to the burial accident at Jangwi 10 District in Seongbuk-gu.
Through joint on-site investigations with the Labor Office and the National Forensic Service, the police determined that the demolition work was not carried out according to the manual, which led to the fatal accident. It was also found that some of the safety equipment required to be installed on site was insufficient.
A police official explained, "According to the demolition plan, the piled materials should have been removed in a timely manner following the manual, but excessive materials were piled up on the 4th floor above ground," adding, "The building collapsed because it could not withstand the load of the piled materials, and one worker fell and died."
On April 30 of this year, Kang Mo (59), who was buried during demolition work at a building in Jangwi 10 District, was found dead about 25 hours after the accident at the initially presumed burial site on the 3rd basement floor.
Kang, a day laborer, was helping by refueling the excavator on the 4th floor above ground with a hose while standing on the 3rd floor slab (floor), but he fell to the depth of the 3rd basement floor and died when the building collapsed.
